Generate secure SECRET_KEY for FastAPI applications with cryptographically strong random values. Review the result before reusing it in another workflow.
FastAPI SECRET_KEY
The SECRET_KEY is used for JWT token signing, session management, and other cryptographic operations in FastAPI. It should be kept secret and unique for each environment.
Recommended: 32+ bytes (256+ bits)
Use Environment Variables
Store SECRET_KEY in environment variables using pydantic-settings or python-dotenv.
Never Commit Secrets
Add .env to .gitignore. Never commit SECRET_KEY to version control.
Different Keys Per Environment
Use unique SECRET_KEY values for development, staging, and production.
Minimum 256 Bits
Use at least 32 bytes (256 bits) for cryptographic security with HS256.
Use Hexadecimal Encoding
Hexadecimal encoding is widely compatible and avoids special character issues.
Rotate Keys Regularly
Implement key rotation strategy, especially after security incidents.
• JWT Token Signing: Sign and verify JWT access/refresh tokens
• Session Management: Secure session cookies and data
• CSRF Protection: Generate and validate CSRF tokens
• Password Reset Tokens: Create secure password reset links
• API Key Generation: Generate secure API keys for users
• Data Encryption: Encrypt sensitive data before storage
# For JWT tokens pip install python-jose[cryptography] # For environment variables pip install python-dotenv pydantic-settings # For password hashing pip install passlib[bcrypt]
